sportTAG Award Scheme - Overview

sportTAG Award Scheme

Introduction

The main objective of the “sportTAG Award Scheme” is to encourage students, by means of awards, to pick their favourite sports and raise their skill levels in those sports progressively through systematic advanced courses and specialised training. Under the Scheme, objective skill tests will be provided by national sports associations (NSAs) to assess students’ skill levels of specific sports and the test results will serve as reference for students’ development in sports skills.

Content of the Scheme

“sportTAG Award Scheme” is targeted at primary and secondary school students. The test criteria are set according to the skill indicators of standard skill training and advanced training of different sports. Students have to possess a certain level of sports skills, against which they will be scored and granted different levels of certificates in recognition of their results.

Students who have been granted different level of awards, represent they obtained the respective skill level. The recognised skill levels are shown as follow:

Recognised Skill Level
Gold Award The skill level of the student should meet the entry requirement for junior squads or reach the level equivalent to or higher than completing the Young Athletes Training Scheme. NSAs may consider selecting students with potential who have passed the test to receive further training in feeder programmes and to join the junior squads.
Silver Award The skill level of the student should reach intermediate or that of a school team member. Upon passing the test, the student may be selected to join inter-school or internal competitions.
Bronze Award The student should have acquired the basic knowledge and skills in playing the respective sport. Upon passing the test, the student will play the sport with confidence.

Students who have passed the skill level tests recognised by any NSA joining the sportTAG Award Scheme and have been granted a sportACT award of any level in the same academic year are eligible to apply for sportTAG awards. Details are as follows:

Way Forward

Students with potential and higher skill levels may be selected by the NSAs for further training in feeder programmes, so that they may become members of junior squads and eventually elite athletes. By making use of this sports skills grading mechanism, the NSAs may even recruit students with good performance and potential into the elite sport training framework for continuous training, so as to sustain the development of the local sports sector.

Students who have attained sportACTsportFIT and sportTAG awards in the same academic year will be given the grand prize of sportEXCEL award.
